CliMathNet is an EPSRC funded initiative in the UK to bring together researchers from all branches of mathematical sciences and climate sciences. The second annual CliMathNet conference will be held from 14-18th July at the University of Leeds, and will address key aims of the network, including understanding the climate system (dynamics, radiation, clouds, feedbacks, nonlinear processes), quantifying uncertainty in climate models, forecasting extreme events, and highlighting novel mathematical and statistical techniques with applications in climate sciences (e.g., numerical methods). The conference will be organised to ensure plenty of time for discussion and interaction across disciplinary boundaries. The confirmed plenary speakers are Brian Hoskins, Doug Maraun, Tim Palmer, Ted Shepherd, Jonathan Tawn, Claudia Tebaldi, John Thuburn, Laure Zanna, and Mary Lou Zeeman.
Contributed talks and posters are invited. Abstracts for oral presentations should be submitted by 30th April, and abstracts for posters should be submitted by 31st May. Early bird registration closes on 11th May.

Feb 25, 2014. The 7th International Conference on Inverse Problems and Related Topics will take place at National Taiwan University, Taipei, from Dec 15 to Dec 19, 2014. This series of conferences were previously held in Hong Kong (2002), Shanghai (2004), Hokkaido (2006), Daejeon (2009), Hong Kong (2010), and Nanjing (2012). This conference features speakers from both theoretical (mathematics) and applied (engineering) aspects of inverse problems. It aims to strengthen the interaction and, most importantly, to nurture collaborations between two groups of scientists. In addition, one of the focuses of the conference is to promote young scholars in inverse problems in the Asia-Pacific region.

Jan 16, 2014. Workshop on Correlated Observation Errors, 23-25th April 2014 - University of Reading. As part of the European Space Agency funded programme of work on Advanced Data Assimilation Methods, the National Centre for Earth Observation is coordinating a workshop on Correlated Observation Errors in Data Assimilation. The workshop is aimed at experts in data assimilation and is open to all who would like to contribute.

Background: In practice, correlated observation errors are not currently used in data assimilation systems due to the difficulties in constructing the covariance matrices and in including the correlations efficiently in the assimilation system. Recent studies have shown, however, that using approximate observation error covariance matrices in data assimilation schemes gives more accurate analyses than using no error correlations and/or inflating the error variances.
Aims: This workshop is intended to bring together specialists to tackle the problems of incorporating observational error covariances in data assimilation systems. The aim will be to enable discussion and exchange of expertise between stakeholders on:

Jan 8, 2014. ECMWF 2014 Annual Seminar: Seminar on Use of Satellite Observations in Numerical Weather Prediction. The 2014 Seminar will be held from September 8 (starting in the afternoon) to September 12 (finishing lunch time).
The Seminar will present a review of recent advances and future challenges in the use of satellite observations of the atmosphere, ocean and land surface for weather and environmental analysis and prediction. Topics to be covered will include a discussion of the value of current and forthcoming satellite observations, with particular foci both on new types of observation and on which variables are under-observed at present. The status of assimilation of cloud-affected observations and observations over land and sea ice will be represented and progress towards a fuller exploitation of the potential of the hyperspectral sounders will also be addressed.
IPTA 2014, hosted by the journal Inverse Problems, will be held in Bristol at the science museum At-Bristol on 26-28th August 2014. This conference represents a new forum to disseminate interdisciplinary inverse problems research and to facilitate increased engagement and collaboration within the international community.
The scientific committee, Professor Alfred K Louis, Professor Simon Arridge and Professor Bill Rundell, have organised a diverse scientific programme which combines mathematical and experimental work with theoretical, numerical and practical approaches to solving inverse problems. As well as supporting the applied mathematics community, the conference will also encompass a plethora of applications including the physical sciences, engineering, geophysics, optics, biology, acoustics, communication theory, signal processing and imaging. We are looking forward to welcoming you to Bristol in 2014!

Jan 6, 2014. In almost every field of science and technology, models are widely used to represent and predict the behaviour of complex real-world systems. These models, built in mathematics and implemented in computer programs, try to simulate reality using all the best current scientific knowledge. We call such models “computer models.” As computer models become more pervasive, and more important for making policy or decisions, there is a growing demand to know how accurate their predictions are. “Uncertainty in Computer Models 2014” will bring together international researchers who are trying to address this question and related problems.
The conference focuses on statistical methods to quantify and analyse the uncertainties in the predictions of computer models. Uncertainty in the model outputs as predictions of reality is induced partly by uncertainty concerning the appropriate values to use for the inputs or parameters in the model, and partly by the fact that all such models are inherently imperfect. We call the first of the sources of uncertainty “parameter uncertainty” and the second “model discrepancy.” Model discrepancy arises from incompleteness and imperfections in the science, as well as from inaccuracies in the computer implementation. Uncertainty in Computer Models 2014 will address all aspects of model uncertainty, both theoretical and practical.
This conference is an initiative of the MUCM (Managing Uncertainty in Complex Models - http://mucm.ac.uk) project. Research in MUCM is concerned with all aspects of uncertainty in computer models, including the propagation of parameter uncertainty, model discrepancy, validation, sensitivity analysis and the calibration of models. Uncertainty in computer models is an emerging and highly topical field of statistical research, with many challenges and an enormous range of applications.
This is the third conference to be organised as a result of the Managing Uncertainty in Complex Models (MUCM) project, being organised through the MUCM Community Steering Group, and follows on from UCM2010 and UCM2012.

The PaleoEcological Observatory Network (PalEON) team offers this hands-on course to 20 graduate students and researchers for training to collect and integrate paleoecological data into modern ecosystem models using Bayesian data assimilation techniques. In this course we will explore the intersection of statistics and functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, which is a non-invasive technique for studying brain activity. We will discuss the analysis of fMRI data, from its acquisition to its use in locating brain activity, making inference about brain connectivity and predictions about psychological or disease states. A standard fMRI study gives rise to massive amounts of noisy data with a complicated spatio-temporal correlation structure. Statistics plays a crucial role in understanding the nature of the data and obtaining relevant results that can be used and interpreted by neuroscientists.

The scope of the issue not only covers a broad range of new studies but also includes attractive review articles on recent investigations.
Finding causes from the knowledge of their effects which actually constitutes the idea of solving inverse problems is necessary for the identifications of important practical applications such as mine detection, medical imaging, nondestructive testing, and geophysical explorations. The aim of this workshop is to inform and to exchange ideas on recent developments in optimization and inverse problems in computational electromagnetic fields. Emphasis lies on design and optimization of electromagnetic devices such as machines, transformers, actuators and measurement equipment used in various applications.
