Inverse Problems has become a very active, interdisciplinary and well-established research area over the past two decades, the same as Optimal Control. Both areas are closely related to each other and have found wide applications in engineering, industry, medicine, as well as life and earth sciences.
This international conference aims to provide a forum for researchers from the world to present and exchange their latest research achievements on Inverse Problems and Optimal Control, as well as their applications. It also aims to promote collaborative research on Inverse Problems and Optimal Control between China and the rest of the world. This conference will encourage international collaboration and interactive activities on Inverse Problems and Optimal Control and provide an opportunity for young researchers to learn the current state of the art in the fields and present their recent research results as well.
In addition to the invited talks, contributed talks are welcome. Moreover, some financial supports are available for young researchers and graduate students.

Sept 16, 2014. Dear Colleague, “Big Data” is a very trendy topic in some parts of science and engineering. Data Assimilation is related to big data, though there are different communities and a broad range of ideas about what “big data” is.
Here, have a look at a whole range of conferences related to computing and big data. They are not “inverse problems” or “data assimilation” directly, but of course with our task to process millions of measurements within minutes for global numerical weather prediction or for brain data assimilation we have tasks which share some of the challenges of “big data”.
Sept 15, 2014. Re. 10th adjoint workshop: Call for suggestions
88 people have indicated their intentions to come to the Workshop on Meteorological Sensitivity Analysis and Data Assimilation, 1-5 June 2015. Ten students and postdocs have requested funding so far. The format will be similar, but not necessarily identical, to the previous Adjoint Workshops, with ample time reserved for questioning and discussion, with both short and long (tutorial-like) talks as well as a more informal evening talk. We will broadcast a call for abstracts in December with submissions due in February. At this time, however, we are asking for recommendations on several more general issues:
1. Previously, we have begun sessions with longer talks intended to present background or fundamentals that could then be skipped in later presentations. Past ones have introduced the subjects of adjoint development (e.g., for moist physics), general sensitivity analysis, singular vector applications, 4DVAR, statistical considerations in data assimilation, ensemble methods, ocean applications, etc. If you have heard a good presentation on these or other topics that would be of interest, either adding some new ideas or clarifying old ones by someone or yourself, please recommend the topic and person. Or, if you would like to hear a long talk presenting some specific topic but have no recommendations for a presenter, please let me know. This is your chance to help shape the workshop.
2. We have always included an informal evening talk. This has generally been less technical (and thus more suited to an evening session than other talks) and often speculative, introducing personal thoughts by some respected expert and often generating discussion of a ranges of issues. If there is a topic and or speaker that you would like to recommend, please do so.
3. Sometimes attendees have requested that a short session be devoted to debate of some issue. In fact, prior to most past workshops, attendees have been asked in announcements like this to suggest suitable topics for debate. So far, however, nothing has been suggested, or at least nothing suitable. For a “debate” we would need a topic sufficiently mature that well considered statements can be made initially at least, with at least two fairly distinct “sides,” along with a set of individuals or groups willing to both present them and respond to criticisms. If there is a topic that you think would be appropriate please let me know along with suggestions of debaters. Our purpose would not be to determine winners and losers, but to teach us, the community, what the real points of agreement and disagreement are and how the latter perhaps could be resolved by suitable experiments.
4. The day before the previous workshops, we had 2 tutorials offered: one on general adjoint sensitivity analysis, and one on general data assimilation and 4DVAR. These were about 4 hours total, and were intended to introduce some basics to novices at the workshop so that the rest of the presentations made more sense to them. If you may be interested in attending one of these, let me know. Students receiving workshop funds who did not attend the previous workshop are expected to attend. These would be offered the Sunday morning and afternoon prior to the start of the workshop. If you think a change in tutorial topics is in order, let me know what you would like covered instead.

Sept 7, 2014. High-Resolution Numerical Weather Prediction needs to use a broad range of classical as well as high-resolution data to determine initial states of the atmosphere. Here, data assimilation is an important part of the system development, including methodological questions as well as inverse problems related to several of the observation systems.
The 2014 COSMO General Meeting will be organized and hosted by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service. It will take place in Greece, at the town of Eretria, from September 8th to 11th. The SMC meeting is scheduled for Thursday afternoon (11/9) and Friday morning (12/9).

South East Asia are among the fastest growing area in the economic terms. However, in fully contrast to this fact, its ecological and environmental condition are achieving an alerted state of decline. Volcano eruptions are day-to-day events, almost all of its lands and seas are severely polluted.
At the same time disaster sensors are to be installed leading to the pooling of relevant data to be collected and analyzed. These sensors shall be installed in a good distributed manner ranging from a locally fixed stations to the mobile type of sensor. MRV was reported based on GEOSAR at X-band as well as at P-band. The initiative called INCAS which resulted the = portrait of the land area change versus carbon stock change, in all Indonesian territory, was reported. This leads to conclusion that more SAR techniques are gaining more and more acceptance in the future, in this area and in the Asia Pacific regions.
In any case, the challenges for efficient sensors both Optical (Images) and mostly Radar approaches are enormous.
On the other hand, the needs of flying sensors will equally prevail for monitoring the environment at precision. The autonomous flight control on board the UAV, smaller and cost effective satellite such as nano or micro satellites, its versatile launching vehicles and ground segment counterparts will no doubt be the unavoidable requisites .
This ICARES 2014 will be a platform for disseminating timely information both in the sensor technology, smaller satellites and launch vehicles as well as in the processing of information. The event shall become a unique opportunity for the AES, GRS and other IEEE Chapters to exchange views and disseminating new trends and advances in the respected fields.

in the conference area of the DWD headquarters building in the Frankfurter Straße 135 in Offenbach, Germany. The seminar will be held from Monday 10:00 to Wednesday 17:00.
The COSMO/CLM/ART User Seminar brings together developers and users of the non-hydrostatic COSMO model, which is used in numerical weather predication as well as regional climate modeling. The meeting is organized by DWD in cooperation with the CLM-Community and the COSMO-ART community.
Contributions on other mesoscale models are also welcome.
The COSMO/CLM/ART User Seminar will be organized in oral and poster session on the following topics:

Sept 1, 2014. The Applied Inverse Problems (AIP) conference will take place in Helsinki, Finland, in May 25-29, 2015. See the conference website for more details: http://aip2015.fips.fi/. According to the tradition of the AIP conference series, the majority of talks will be given as part of minisymposia.
A minisymposium has four or eight 30-minute time slots, each with 25 minutes for the talk and 5 minutes for questions and comments from the audience. We welcome minisymposium proposals consisting of a title, a description (not to exceed 100 words), and a list of speakers and the titles of their presentations.
It is recommended that a minisymposium organizer gives the first presentation. Each minisymposium speaker should submit an at most 75-word abstract. The organizing committee will referee minisymposium proposals. The number of minisymposia may be limited to retain an acceptable level of parallelism in the conference sessions.
Participants are limited to presenting at most two talks during AIP in order to maximize the opportunity for all participants to speak. If you are invited to speak in more than one minisymposium, we suggest you use the opportunity to nominate a collaborator to speak about your work.
To ensure balance, AIP prefers that a single individual is the organizer of at most two minisymposia. In addition, AIP discourages minisymposia in which most of the speakers come from the same organization or all co-authors on the papers being presented are from the same organization.
To encourage the submission of more and high-quality minisymposia, a limited number of minisymposia will be selected by the organizing committee according to the number and diversity of speakers as well as the significance of the topics, and the registration fee of one speaker of these selected minisymposia will be waived.

Aug 21, 2014. We would like to announce a two-day workshop on multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) of neuroimaging data on September 19-20, 2014 at the University of Giessen in Germany. The workshop aims to convey the basic concepts of MVPA and its practical application to neuroimaging data. It features lectures covering topics from basic principles of MVPA to various specific methodologies currently found in the literature. The majority of the time will be spent on hands-on sessions, in which participants will be introduced to PyMVPA (http://www.pymvpa.org), a free software package providing all tools necessary to conduct MVPA. The course will be taught by the authors of PyMVPA, Michael Hanke (University of Magdeburg, Germany) and Yaroslav Halchenko (Dartmouth College, NH, USA).

Aug 8, 2014. The fourth International Symposium on Data Assimilation (ISDA) will take place on February 23-26, 2015, at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS), Kobe, Japan.
The ISDA 2015 continues a series of well received symposia: the German Symposium on Data Assimilation 2011 and the ISDA 2012 both at the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) in Offenbach, Germany, and the ISDA 2014 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich, Germany.

Inverse problems is a very broad area, ranging from nondestructive testing to medical imaging, from inverse source problems to state estimation. Determining unknown quantities from remote measurements is in the very heart of inverse problems.
Inversion is a task which is very important in many parts of engineering sciences. But there are also mathematicians working on it - with deep insight into the non-uniqueness, instability and stabilization (=regularization) of the problem which are of huge importance for many application areas.

With this book, the editors present the first comprehensive collection in neural field studies, authored by leading scientists in the field - among them are two of the founding-fathers of neural field theory. Up to now, research results in the field have been disseminated across a number of distinct journals from mathematics, computational neuroscience, biophysics, cognitive science and others. Starting with a tutorial for novices in neural field studies, the book comprises chapters on emergent patterns, their phase transitions and evolution, on stochastic approaches, cortical development, cognition, robotics and computation, large-scale numerical simulations, the coupling of neural fields to the electroencephalogram and phase transitions in anesthesia.
